Now It's Your Turn

The FDA has had this law on the books since 2011. It is interesting how big this food safety issue is to the federal government. In last weeks Issue on Big Food we discussed how we need more transparency in the food chain and how some smaller firms are addressing that issue of transparency. Well in case you forgot about it the deadline for small business (defined by the government as firms under the 500 employee mark) to comply is September 2017.

Transparency is the main objective of these new rules, but trying to understand what that means is going to be a real headache for the small to medium businesses that we serve. As many in our audience are already aware there are third party organizations like SQF that perform audit and accreditation services for the food industry. These organizations create the transparency required by large retailers to resell their products.

That puts a lot of our readership in next year's group. So if you are just thinking about it now you need to act and get ready for the laws. In reading my own industry newsletters I came upon a great article on how to get started. The FDA which handles all non meat related inspections will be requiring a Food Safety Plan. Credit for the following tip goes to Ron Tanner, Vice President of Specialty Food Association.

Appoint a Food Safety Team with members from each facet of the production process. Make sure to appoint one person as the head of the team. Just like inventory control and other functions someone has to be in charge. Do an audit that identifies the following factors for each product you produce.

  • Intended use.
  • Potential mishandling and unintended use.
  • Intended consumers (i.e. general public, elderly, etc.)
  • Labeling instructions relevant to food safety.

This is the beginning steps of the Food Safety Plan required for your business.

Last year we were early to declare our New Years Resolutions 2018. A lot has changed over in 2018, but I believe it's not quite too late to make sure we have addressed some of those resolutions.
